Quantifiers
Quantifier state the number or amount of something. Quantifiers can be single words or phrases. Quantifiers are used with both nouns and pronouns, are often used alone if the noun or pronoun has just been mentioned, as in a question.
Quantifiers are used with different types of nouns:
a. With singular count nouns: one, each, every, etc.
b. With plural count nouns: two, both, a couple of, a number of, etc.
c. With non-count nouns: a little, little, much, a great deal of, a great amount of, etc.
d. With bith plural count nouns and non-count nouns: no, any, some, enough, a lot of / lots of, plenty of, most, all, etc.
Use a few / few with count nouns and a little / little with
non-count nouns. Note the difference between a few and few and
between a little and little. Use a few and a little to make positive
statements.
Use many with count nouns and much with non-count nouns. In spoken
affirmative statement, native speaker usually prefer a lot of or alots of to
much and many, which sound more formal. This is especially true of much.
Use a great many with count nouns and a great deal of with
non-count nouns. These quantifiers are rather formal and found more in writting
than in speech.
Use some and any with count nouns and non-count nouns. Use some in
affirmative statement. Use any in negative statement. Use both some and any in
question. In general, use some in offers and any in negative question.
Many quantifiers appear in phrases with the prepotition of. Use of
+ the or another determiner when you are specifying particular person, places,
things, or groups.
